Our unique, high-speed displacement hulls provide the ultimate soft ride (And we can prove it)

Over the past 25 years, Glacier Bay has concentrated on perfecting the high-speed, displacement hull. No other major builder has the technology and experience to offer boats with Glacier Bay’s smooth, silky ride and extraordinary sea keeping ability. This means Glacier Bay owners can travel at high rates of speed, even in severe sea conditions.

Catamaran hull shapes, especially those with narrow beams, realize hull speeds much higher than the theoretical hull speeds of conventional displacement hulls like sail boats or container ships. This fact, combined with a catamaran’s famous soft ride, results in Glacier Bay’s renowned efficiency and smooth, seaworthy safety. At speed, the Glacier Bay displacement hull slices through the water, traveling with the shape of the seas rather than flying over them and experiencing reentry shock. This results in a stable, smooth ride you and your crew will find incredible, almost unbelievable. In fact, tough sea conditions become something you’ll perversely look forward to because you have equipment other boats can’t match.

Accelerometer testing shows two-thirds less impact

Accelerometer testing shows that compared to comparable monohulls, Glacier Bay Catamarans provide a 60 percent reduction in peak impact loads when crossing a three-foot boat wake at 27 knots (31 mph). That means Glacier Bay owners experience about two-thirds less impact than that of a monohull. Imagine traveling through a choppy seaway with only one-third the impact of a deep-vee monohull.

Our impact testing compared two 26 foot boats: a Glacier Bay 2660 Center Console and an identically weighted, high-quality, 24 degree, deep-vee, center console. In simultaneous tests, the Glacier Bay achieved a 60 percent reduction in impact loads. The readings were taken when the two boats crossed head-on into the 36-inch wake of a 40-foot motor yacht at 27 knots. Readings were taken with a three-axis accelerometer reading the impact results using a sampling rate of 50,000 times per minute. The resulting graphs, an electronic summary of the three measurement axis (Vertical, side-to-side and front-to-back), show what your human body actually feels with each impact. A 60% impact reduction is a great relief for Glacier Bay owners and their guests!

Tests show 50 percent less roll when at rest of drifting

In another test, using the same test accelerometer equipment, boats were tested for roll acceleration and roll angle when drifting beam to a 40-foot motor yacht wake. On a monohull the wave creates a back and forth pendulum motion that continues and intensifies with each wave. In contrast, the Glacier Bay hulls follow the contour of the wave without intensifying. So, the Glacier Bay resulted in half the roll acceleration and angle of the comparable monohull. That is half the motion you’ll experience whether cruising the harbor or anchoring over a reef.
